Kim, The Zen Wrangler on Kaleidoscope Radio

Jonathan hosts Kim Rasmussen, aka the Zen Wrangler, for a dive into her playlist + a discussion of her work as a massage therapist, sound healer, reiki master and more...! "Personal Business" is an occasional show from Kaleidoscope, a nonprofit Creative Sanctuary in Lafayette, CO.

More about Kim’s Playlist Choices:

  1.  She's A Rainbow by The Rolling Stones
I love the Rolling Stones - I've seen them 3 times and traveled for 2 of the shows, once in Philadelphia in 99 on Spring Break with three other Marshfield Tiger Queens, then 20 years later here in Denver 2019 with Jesse at Mile High and again in 2024, Vancouver, BC.  This is also the song my dad and I danced to together at my wedding.  It’s such a women light up the world song!

  2. Stuck in the Middle with You by Stealers Wheel
My lifelong best friend, Angel, and my song  - we met in daycare both being dressed up as Wonder Woman (the picture is framed on my desk) and then shortly after that while in grade school - my family moved right down the street from hers and we grew up together.  Her mom Jane is who I would credit for my love of the classic rock genre - she has a wonderful vinyl collection that we went through and played all the time.

  3. Voodoo Lady by Ween
This song was my Intro song for my UWSP radio show - that was my first major, Radio Production.  I think I only had that my freshman year and then changed to Advertising, PR and Mass Media/Film under the Communication's Department or something like that...  I studied Hitchcock films, commercials during 90210, and Doc Martens.  One of my favorite classes taken in college was Vampires in Literature.  It was fascinating and I also remember the professor totally played the part too - very goth and mysterious.  I learned a lot about the history and how these creatures are interwoven in lots of Lore.

  4. Gold on the Ceiling by The Black Keys
I'd say this one is my walkup song! To me, it's like saying what's coming is a big deal and has such raw energy! Enjoy the moment! My sister Jill and I bond with The Black Keys.  We've seen them together in Milwaukee and then after the show - we met Patrick Carney, the drummer in the bar with the longest bar.  I was actually driving out to Colorado that next morning to visit our younger sister, Kelly, and was talking about how I should probably get home as I had a long drive the next day.  He commented that he also had a long drive the next day out to Baltimore, and I was like, "you're not driving! You ride on a tour bus."

  5. My Silver Lining by First Aid Kit
I mean these voices give me chills and I have my sister Kelly to thank for introducing me to this group.  It was hard to pick a favorite, but this live version is amazing and on repeat when you gotta keep on, keepin on

  6. It's good to be King (Kim) by Tom Petty
So this jam, another friend from way back when Amber sang to me at a Tom Petty show... it's good to be Kim and it'll remain that way for me forever.  He played Summerfest in Milwaukee for many years in a row and a big group of friends would get together and go to the shows.  I probably could have filled this playlist with just Tom Petty songs and for sure Wildflowers was in the running - I gotta shout out to Lemmy! my niece, she's definitely meant to be among the Wildflowers.

  7. The Fool by Qveen Herby
This is actually my next show coming up at the Mission in Denver!  It's my latest pump song when I need to get moving!  Super excited, love her whimsical style. The Fool in Tarot means limitless potential and pure possibility.

  8. Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix
I had to have at least one Jimi song on the list. This goes back to the Classic Rock love, and I could have filled this list with Jimi, Janis, The Doors, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, and so many more but Jimi always seems to rise to the top for me.  So original and totally had his own style.

  9. Wow by Beck
Love Beck!  I've seen him live many times with both my husband Jesse and the bff Angel.

  10. The Story by Dolly Parton
This song was mine and Jesse's wedding song.  It's written by Brandy Carlile and she's recorded it, love that version too but the energy Dolly gives it is chef's kiss.

Not played:
Maybe on the next one!  He's asked me if I wanted to do a show of my own.  I’m thinking on it but possibly monthly.  I have to get rid of saying the filler “you know” amongst others and the only way to do that is practice, you know.

  1. Global Concepts by Robert Delong
When I give gifts, I would rather have them be experiences or to make memories.  One year for my nieces, Kayla and Haylee, I got VIP tickets to a music festival in Milwaukee, Rock on the Green.  One of the headliners was Robert Delong and we really enjoyed the show.  At the end, he said that he would be hanging out at the merch tent. So the girls, my sister Jill (their mom) and I got to meet him, take individual pictures and as a group.  He was so nice and personable, and the pictures come back out as a great moment for all of us.

  2. Can't Hold Us by Macklemore
At my parents’ cabin on a lake in northern Wisconsin, only two radio stations come in well... and they are both dance music stations!  After an afternoon of pontoon boat riding, we'd end up dancing in the living room to whatever is playing on the radio - one day my mom announced that this one was her favorite! It's a fun jam and a wonderful memory of her dancing it up.
